AS soon as she saw a pair of headlights slice through the rain, Beth waved goodbye to Syd and Helen and rushed out to the truck.

Since Helen had given her an umbrella to use, she was able to go most of the way without getting too wet. But it took her a few seconds to wrestle it closed again before she could shut the door. When she turned, however, she was momentarily struck dumb.

Since meeting Bodey Taggart, she’d seen him in a variety of western costumes—cowboy, cavalry officer, gunslinger. But there was nothing old fashioned about him now. He wore faded jeans that hugged his thighs and hips, a T-shirt that had probably seen a thousand washings, a loose leather jacket, and a green baseball cap with the words TAGGART ENTERPRISES embroidered with white thread.

The effect of the casual dress was like meeting him all over again. The cap made his jaw more angular, his nose blade thin. For the first time, she noticed that he had a faint cleft in his chin that was accented by the beginnings of stubble which gleamed in the dome light.

“Ready?”

“Yeah.”

He flipped a switch, plunging the cab into shadows, then began to navigate the muddy parking lot.

Looking out at the still falling rain and the gusting wind, she was grateful that she didn’t have to make the trip home on her bicycle. But there was no escaping the fact that she would be getting wet all over again. Once Bodey dropped her off at her supposed digs, she would still have to walk several blocks home.

“Helen made me promise that I’d stop and get you some dinner.”

Conflicting emotions see-sawed in her stomach at the pronouncement. Much as she would like to spend more time with him, she worried that the storm had upset Dolly. And Eric was a good kid, but he needed to be relieved from his role of babysitter.

Bodey gestured to the clock on the dashboard. “I’ll take you somewhere quick. Then, you’ll still be back long before you would have been if the storm hadn’t washed out vendors’ row.

She opened her mouth, ready to refuse. But heaven help her. She couldn’t. Not when her time with him was already so limited. And she would be back early. Eric and Dolly wouldn’t be watching for her yet. If she stayed, maybe she would have a chance to talk to Bodey. Really talk.

No.

She had to remember that this man could never be more than a brief, casual flirtation. After everything that had already happened between them, she really needed to throw on the brakes. Otherwise, she was bound to do something that she would later regret. Because, so far, they’d kissed, they’d flirted, they’d succumbed to heated moments of passion.

But she honestly couldn’t handle anything more . . . emotional or binding. And she couldn’t have him thinking that she might.

Even though she wanted to surrender to anything he might offer her. More than she would ever willingly admit.

“I really shouldn’t. I’ve been gone so much that—”

Stop! Stop before you say too much.
